Hummingbird Feeder Care

Have you heard that all you have to do to attract hummingbirds is put up a feeder? Actually in most cases that's true however, there are a few more tips that will assure that your hummingbirds keep coming back for more.

I'm sure you researched the feeders available to find the one suitable for your yard and now you are ready to fill it with the sweet nectar that your hummingbirds will love. Before you do that you should rinse the feeder with warm water to remove any manufactures residual.

Take a look around your yard using the hummingbird's perspective. Do you have some bright colored flowers, a low-limbed tree, a water source? These are all possible sites for your feeder. A shady spot will help to slow the solution spoilage but it will also make it harder to see all the colors of the hummingbird. If you are lucky you have already seen hummingbirds in your yard and know where they like to feed. That makes it even easier. Either way you put your feeder in the most likely spot and give it a few days. If no activity occurs just try another spot until you get lucky.

Once you have the little birds coming to your feeder you want to make sure they keep coming back. This means keeping the solution fresh and the feeder clean. Depending on your weather you will need to change the solution every 3 to 4 days to avoid spoilage. Just like you, hummingbirds don't like sour food. If they find the solution sour too often they will go somewhere else.

When you bring the feeder in to change the solution you will want to wash it thoroughly with warm soapy water and rinse extremely well. Check for signs of mold and if found you may need to use a brush to clean the mold off. I have an old toothbrush that fits perfectly in my feeders. I've heard that you can use sand and water as well. If your feeder happens to become heavily moldy you can use a weak solution of bleach and water to soak it clean. Plan to rinse it vigorously to remove all the bleach. This is also a good time to look for broken or missing parts that might be hazardous to the hummingbirds. Some manufacturers have websites that offer replacement parts. Now get that feeder out before you have a hummingbird tapping at your window. I have had my hummingbirds get right in my face while I'm taking down or putting up their feeder. It's better to be sneaky and refill it at night then enjoy the renewed activity in the morning.
